Meiji Maru Maritime Museum Project

We will support the maritime museum business, including the preservation of the important cultural property "Meiji Maru".
National Important Cultural Property "Meiji Maru"
This steamship, built in the UK in 1874, is the only iron ship still in existence in Japan (all current ships are steel). In 1875, when the issue of sovereignty over the Ogasawara Islands arose, it carried a Japanese government survey team and reached Ogasawara before any British ships, playing an important role in establishing Japan's sovereignty. In 1876, Emperor Meiji embarked on the ship from Aomori during his tour of Tohoku and Hokkaido, passing through Hakodate and arriving safely in Yokohama on July 20th. To commemorate this day, the national holiday "Marine Day" (currently the third Monday in July) was established. In 1896, it was transferred to Tokyo Higher School of Mercantile Marine, the predecessor of our university, and was used as a moored training ship for over 50 years, educating approximately 5,000 sailors. In 1978, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan as a valuable heritage that conveys shipbuilding techniques from the iron ship era to the present day, and its graceful appearance will be preserved forever.
[National Important Cultural Property (Designation: May 53, 5, Designation Number: Ken No. 31)]
The Meiji Maru will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 6. As a ship that has made numerous achievements and contributed to the modernization of modern Japan, you can see it continuing to play an active role in various situations in the future..
