Connecting aquatic life to the future. This department explores from a scientific perspective how to protect, nurture, and utilize the diverse organisms that live in aquatic environments such as oceans, rivers, and lakes.

In this department, we engage in a wide range of learning and research that combines cutting-edge life sciences, environmental sciences, and information sciences, with a focus on the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic life.

[Protecting aquatic life]

While facing drastic changes in the aquatic environment such as global warming, environmental changes due to human development and pollution, and habitat loss, we are engaged in education and research to gain a deeper understanding of the physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms and contribute to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and the maintenance of biodiversity.

[Increase and utilize aquatic organisms]

We develop cutting-edge aquaculture technologies that reduce environmental impact, and also use data science andAIWe are engaged in education and research to preserve biological resources for the future, such as resource assessment using technology and development of sustainable fishing techniques. Another important theme is the exploration of new ways to utilize the inherent abilities and physiological functions of aquatic organisms.

[Main Research Contents]

Physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms (fish, invertebrates, algae), aquaculture, genomics, resource management (AI?Statistics and environmental data analysis), development of environmentally friendly fishing gear and fishing methods, applied microbiology, etc.

[Course after graduation]

Approximately half of the students go on to graduate school to deepen their expertise, and after graduation, there is a good chance that they will find employment in fisheries-related companies, the food industry, environmental assessment and research institutions, aquariums, and as a civil servant.

If you are interested in creatures that live in the sea or rivers, we recommend the Department of Marine Biological Resources.
